Meet the Real Pilots and Controllers of Opposing Bases

Real pilots. Real controllers. Real talk.

Opposing Bases Air Traffic Talk is hosted by two experienced pilots and air traffic controllers. RH is a major-airline First Officer and former controller. AG is an active FAA air traffic controller and former Army instructor pilot.

Since January 2018, they have shown up every week to explain how aviation actually works from both sides of the frequency — with timeless conversations designed to help pilots and controllers become better users of the National Airspace System.

Built for the Aviation Community 📡

Opposing Bases focuses on ATC, IFR flying, airline operations, general aviation, pilot-controller communication, and the decisions that shape how the NAS works in the real world.

The show is driven by the audience. Listener questions, stories, mistakes, corrections, and unusual aviation situations regularly become the conversations RH and AG break down on the podcast.

Opposing Bases also appears live at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and remains ad-free and listener-supported.

Alpha Golf, Opposing Bases air traffic controller and pilot

Alpha Golf (AG)

AG is a full-time FAA air traffic controller with more than 15 years of experience in radar and tower operations at a Class Charlie airport in the southern United States. He also serves as an ATC trainer, teaching other controllers to work traffic safely and efficiently.

Before joining the FAA, AG was a U.S. Army instructor pilot flying the C-12 and CH-47 Chinook. He logged more than 2,200 flight hours, including combat operations in Afghanistan.

That combination of military flying and current ATC experience gives AG a perspective shaped by both sides of the radio: operating aircraft in demanding environments and controlling traffic from the ground.

Romeo Hotel, Opposing Bases airline pilot and former air traffic controller

Romeo Hotel (RH)

RH is a First Officer at a major U.S. airline and currently flies the Boeing 737. His airline career has also included extensive international flying on the Boeing 757 and 767, including more than 150 Atlantic crossings.

Before flying for the airlines, RH spent nearly 14 years working radar and tower air traffic control. He has also flown as a CFI, regional airline pilot, and corporate jet pilot.

RH was recognized by the AOPA Air Safety Institute with the Flight Assist Award and continues to contribute to aviation education through podcasting, writing, speaking, and flight instruction.

His background lets him translate between what controllers are trying to accomplish on the ground and what pilots are managing in the cockpit — especially when those priorities do not line up perfectly.
